Campagnolo Record rear derailleurs
Short Cage Medium Cage Long Cage
Record RD
Campagnolo Record rear Derailleurs:
  • Campagnolo Record rear derailleurs are feather light to provide quick and smooth shifting on two or three chain ring crank sets.
  • Both the two and three ring Record rear derailleurs use a polished, silver anodized body, a titanium cable anchor bolt, a titanium frame hanger bolt, a removable carbon fiber body face plate and a carbon fiber pulley wheel cage, face plate. The main derailleur body and pulley wheel cage, rear plate are constructed of aluminum alloy.
  • The two ring or short cage Record rear derailleur tips the scales at a mere 184 grams while the medium cage model comes in at just 193 grams. The longest cage or three chain ring model weighs 195 grams.
  • The short cage model is most commonly used for two chain ring drive trains. The medium cage can be employed with two or three chain ring drivetrains while the longest cage is almost always used for three chain ring drivetrains. The distance from the center of the top pulley wheel bolt to the bottom pulley wheel bolt is:
Short cage is 55mm, medium cage equals 72.5mm and the long cage is 89mm.
  • Confused as to what length rear derailleur cage you need? See our easy to understand sidebar "Rear Derailleur Cage length explained..." by clicking on the underlined text.
  • Both the two and three chain ring Record rear derailleurs are designed to shift with Campagnolo 8, 9 or 10 speed drive trains. We recommend replacing the pulley wheels with wider, 8.8mm nine speed ones, to accommodate 9 speed chains. As long as you use a 9 speed chain and 9 speed pulley wheels, you may use this rear derailleur on an 8 speed Campagnolo drive train. It will shift fine with 8 speed Ergo, downtube or bar end levers. The existing pulley wheel bolts will accept both 9 and 10 speed pulley wheels.
  • For just $10.00 we can convert any new 10 speed rear derailleur, at the time of purchase, to 9 speed. $10.00 covers the labor only; we keep the 10 speed pulley wheels while giving you the wider, 9 speed ones.
We do not recommend using 9 speed chains with 10 speed pulley wheels. The chain will hit the inside pulley wheel cage plates causing excess wear and noise.
Ten speed pulley wheels are 8.4 mm wide and have tiny "C10" letters stamped on the steel end caps. Nine speed pulley wheels have plain end caps and are 8.8mm wide. The actual plastic toothed wheels are the same for 9 and 10 speed; only the end caps and internal bushings are different.
  • The upper pulley wheel has built in side to side play to help with indexing. The lower pulley wheel has no play and should be installed with the lettering facing away from your bicycle's frame. We suggest removing, cleaning and lubricating the pulley wheels every 1500 miles or once a year. They should be replaced every 5000 to 8000 miles.
  • The short and medium length cage assemblies are interchangeable so you may use this rear derailleur on another bicycle drive train. The long cage only fits the long cage rear derailleur.
  • In 2001 Campagnolo changed the geometry of their 9 speed rear derailleur. Current Campagnolo 9 or 10 speed rear derailleurs will NOT work with pre-2001 Ergo levers unless you upgrade the internal Ergo Index Gear to a current 9 speed model. If you do upgrade, you will be rewarded with quicker and more precise shifting. 2001 to current, 9 speed rear derailleurs, can easily be upgraded to 10 speed by simply replacing the 9 speed pulley wheels with 10 speed ones.
  • Pre-2001 nine speed rear derailleurs have a "B" adjusting screw located on the derailleur hanger tab next to the frame hanger mounting bolt. The "B" adjusting screw butts against your frame's rear dropout and allows you to adjust the angle of the derailleur body. 2001 to current 9 and 10 speed rear derailleurs have the "B" adjusting screw located at the junction of the derailleur body and pulley wheel cage.
Campagnolo Pre-2001 Rear Derailleur
Chorus RD
The red arrow points to a "B" adjusting screw that rests on the
frame's dropout. Newer rear derailleurs have the "B" adjusting
screw located on the pulley wheel cage where it joins the rear derailleur body.

  • We suggest using Le Tour Premium Chain Lube for lubricating all Campagnolo rear derailleurs. A drop on each pivot point, pulley wheel bushing and the frame hanger bolt, once a month or after a rain storm, will insure long life and smooth shifting. Always wipe off excess chain lube or accumulated dirt.
  • We suggest using a Park Torque Wrench, for the most accurate installation. Campagnolo recommends tightening the mounting bolt to 15 Newton Meters (N.m) or 11.1 foot pounds. The cable anchor bolt should be tightened to 6 Newton Meters (N.m) or 4.4 foot pounds. Be sure to place the derailleur wire behind or on the spoke side, of the cable anchor bolt. If placed in front of the bolt, the rear derailleur will not index properly.

Rear Derailleur Chain Wrap Capacity (CW) Easily Explained...

Campagnolo officially recommends various rear derailleur cage lengths for use with specific cassette and double or triple chain ring combinations. However, it is important to understand that any 1999 to current, Campagnolo 10 speed rear derailleur, will shift up to a 29 tooth cog and down to an 11 tooth cog. The problem you will run into is that the derailleur cage may not be long enough to take up all the slack in the chain for a wide range. Thus Campagnolo recommends using a short cage derailleur with a maximum cassette cog size of 26 teeth even though it will shift to a 29 tooth cog. Chain wrap or CW is a helpful concept to understand when you need to determine proper derailleur cage length.

Current Record, Chorus, Centaur and Veloce 9 and 10 speed rear derailleurs use the same three cage lengths; 55, 72.5 and 89 mm measured from the center of the upper jockey wheel to the center of the lower jockey wheel. 55 mm cages have a chain wrap value of 27; 72.5 cages have a CW of 36 while 89mm long cages have a chain wrap value of 39.

Chain Wrap is a simple calculation that will help you determine whether the rear derailleur you choose has a long enough cage to take up the chain slack in your drive train. The shorter the cage, the lighter and stiffer the derailleur and the quicker it will shift. Calculate Chain Wrap to get the greatest shifting performance.
To calculate Chain Wrap Capacity determine the difference between your largest and smallest chain ring. Then determine the difference between your largest and smallest cog. Add the differences and you have Chain Wrap Capacity.

Example: 42/52 chain rings and a 12/21 cassette yields a CW of 19. 52 - 42 = 10. 21 - 12 = 9. 10 + 9 = 19. So, with a 42/52 chain ring and a 12-21 cassette you would need a rear derailleur that has a Chain Wrap Capacity of at least 19.
For a 39/53 and a 13/26 combo you will need a minimum CW of 27. 53-39 = 14. 26 - 13 = 13. 14 + 13 = 27. In practice the CW numbers are flexible by one or two points. You could use a 39/53 with a 12-26 cassette with a CW of 27 even though the calculation calls for 28.

Campagnolo Chorus rear Derailleurs:
  • Campagnolo Chorus and Record rear derailleurs are almost identical. Chorus differs by using a stainless steel cable anchor bolt, a chromed steed frame hanger bolt and an aluminum alloy face plate for its pulley wheel cage. Like Record, it provides fast and responsive shifting on two and three chain ring drivetrains.
  • Both the two and three ring Chorus rear derailleurs use a polished, silver anodized body, a stainless steel cable anchor bolt, a chromed steel frame hanger bolt, a removable carbon fiber body face plate and a full aluminum alloy pulley wheel cage and main derailleur body.
  • The two ring or short cage Chorus rear derailleur tips the scales at a mere 202 grams while the medium cage model comes in at just 205 grams. The longest cage or three chain ring model weighs 217 grams.

Branford Bike Online Catalog - Archival Edition
brought to you by the former owner of Branford Bike, Tim Brockett via his personal web site, TimsLife.Com
This is an archival edition of the Branford Bike web site from February 2006. Complete with product photos, prices, how to articles and technical specifications it is a treasure trove of accurate, detailed and historical information.

In July of 2006 Branford Bike was incinerated by a huge forest fire. No one was hurt but the inventory and buildings were completely destroyed. I witnessed the fire and stayed until the trees were burning in my driveway. At that point I hiked from Branford Bike, through the smoke and embers, down the mountain to my Jeep 3 miles away. I took photos and wrote about the harrowing experience so everyone could see what I saw. My insurance was generous and I later rebuilt my home and started another business selling books. Read the story here.

Branford Bike was a huge part of my life for over 30 years; June 1976 to July 2006. I enjoyed those years tremendously and Branford Bike was often a labor of love. I hope you enjoy browsing through the archival catalog. If your visit brings back pleasant memories please share them with me via e-mail at timbrockett@gmail.com .

If you find any printed Branford Bike catalogs, advertisments or flyers please scan them as a PDF and email. Or you may mail them via US Post to Tim Brockett, PO Box 1711, Emigrant, MT 59027. Eventually I will post them in a Memorabilia catalog section.

Many Thanks and Best Wishes,
Tim Brockett
