Campagnolo Record Front Derailleurs:
  • Campagnolo Record front derailleurs are feather light to provide quick and smooth shifting on two or three chain ring crank sets.
  • Both the two and three ring Record front derailleurs use a polished, black anodized body, a titanium cable anchor bolt and a silver anodized clamp or braze-on seat tube mount.
  • The two chain ring model features a hard anodized alloy cage with a carbon fiber front or face plate. The three ring or triple model uses a full alloy, hard anodized cage.
  • The two ring Record front derailleur tips the scales at a mere 69 grams while the triple or three chain ring model, comes in at just 94 grams.
  • The capacity, or difference allowed between the smallest and largest chain rings, for a Record two ring front derailleur is 15 teeth.
  • The capacity, or difference allowed between the smallest and largest chain rings, for a Record three ring front derailleur is 23 teeth.
  • Both the two and three chain ring Record front derailleurs are designed to shift with Campagnolo 9 and 10 speed drive trains. We do not recommend, popping the resin insert out of the two ring Record front derailleur carbon face plate, to accommodate wider 8 speed chains. The resin insert prevents wear to the carbon face plate while still allowing 9 and 10 speed chains to pass through with ease.
  • The cage assembly is easily removable by simply loosening a 3mm allen bolt. You can switch the cage assembly to another type or clamp size mount for use on another bicycle frame.
  • It is ok to use Record front derailleurs with Chorus, Centaur, Veloce or Mirage rear derailleurs.
  • Neither model is available with a 28.6mm or 1 1/8 inch diameter clamp on style mount. We suggest using a Le Tour shim with a 32mm front clamp on derailleur instead. The Le Tour shim fits perfectly and looks great.
  • We suggest using Le Tour Premium Chain Lube for lubricating all Campagnolo front derailleurs. A drop on each pivot point, once a month or after a rain storm, will insure long life and smooth shifting. Always wipe off excess chain lube or accumulated dirt.
  • We suggest using a Park Torque Wrench, for the most accurate installation. Campagnolo recommends tightening the mounting bolt to 7 Newton Meters (N.m) or 5.2 foot pounds. The cable anchor bolt should be tightening to 5 Newton Meters (N.m) or 3.7 foot pounds.

Front Derailleur Type and Capacity Explained

A Clamp-on, a Braze-on front derailleur and a braze-on seat tube tab.

A clamp on style front derailleur literally clamps on to your bicycle's seat tube. The clamp size usually matches the outside diameter of your frame's seat tube(not to be confused with the diameter of your seat post). You may use a Le Tour shim to mount a 32 mm clamp on front derailleur to a 28.6 mm seat tube.
The green seat tube to the right sports a braze on front derailleur. Note how a tab, that is usually brazed on to the frame, extends from the seat tube. A braze on type, front derailleur, bolts directly to that tab.

A front derailleur's capacity is simply the difference between the number of teeth on your largest and smallest chain ring. For example if you have a 39/53 chain ring combo, (53 - 39 = 14), you will need a front derailleur with a capacity of 14 teeth or more. If you have a 30/40/50 chain ring combo,
(50 - 30 = 20), you will need a front derailleur with a 20 tooth or more capacity.

You can use a triple front derailleur with a double chain ring crank set. A double chain ring front derailleur is lighter and will shift more quickly though.

Campagnolo Chorus Front Derailleurs:
  • Campagnolo Chorus and Record front derailleurs are almost identical. Chorus uses steel bolts instead of titanium. Both two and three chain ring models employ a full alloy cage instead of a partial carbon one offered with the Record two ring model.
  • Both the two and three ring Chorus front derailleurs use a polished, black anodized body, a chromed steel cable anchor bolt and a silver anodized clamp or braze-on seat tube mount.
  • Chorus two and three chain ring front derailleurs employ a full alloy, hard anodized cage.
  • The two ring Chorus front derailleur tips the scales at a mere 74 grams while the triple or three chain ring model, comes in at just 98 grams.
  • The capacity, or difference allowed between the smallest and largest chain rings, for a Chorus two ring front derailleur is 15 teeth.
  • The capacity, or difference allowed between the smallest and largest chain rings, for a Chorus three ring front derailleur is 23 teeth.
  • Both the two and three chain ring Record front derailleurs are designed to shift with Campagnolo 8, 9 or 10 speed drive trains. It is ok to pop the resin insert out of the two ring Chorus front derailleur hardened alloy face plate to accommodate wider 8 speed chains. We suggest leaving the resin insert intact for use with 9 and 10 speed chains
  • The cage assembly is easily removable by simply loosening a 3mm allen bolt. You can switch the cage assembly to another type or clamp size mount for use on another bicycle frame.
  • It is ok to use Chorus front derailleurs with Record, Centaur, Veloce or Mirage rear derailleurs.

This is an archival edition of the Branford Bike web site from February 2006. Complete with product photos, prices, how to articles and technical specifications it is a treasure trove of accurate, detailed and historical information.

In July of 2006 Branford Bike was incinerated by a huge forest fire. No one was hurt but the inventory and buildings were completely destroyed. I witnessed the fire and stayed until the trees were burning in my driveway. At that point I hiked from Branford Bike, through the smoke and embers, down the mountain to my Jeep 3 miles away. I took photos and wrote about the harrowing experience so everyone could see what I saw. My insurance was generous and I later rebuilt my home and started another business selling books. Branford Bike was a huge part of my life for over 30 years; June 1976 to July 2006. I enjoyed those years tremendously and Branford Bike was often a labor of love.
