Please note that Campagnolo has changed their 9 speed rear derailleurs in 2001. They are now modeled after their lighter and faster shifting, 2000 10 speed rear derailleurs. Campagnolo 2001 to current 9 speed rear derailleurs are NOT compatible with 1997 to 2000, 9 speed Ergo levers unless you upgrade to a new 2001 to current Ergo Cam. However, your current 9 speed system is NOT obsolete! All of the 2001 and 2002 9 speed cassettes and chains will work with all Campy 9 speed systems.
If you wish to upgrade your 1999 - 2000 9 speed system all you need to purchase is a current rear derailleur and a current Ergo lever 9 speed Ergo cam. Another cam will fit all 1992 to 1998 8 and 9 speed Ergo levers and allow them to be used with a 2001/02/03 9 speed rear derailleur.
Interestingly, Campagnolo's current 9 speed rear derailleur will shift fairly well with any Campy 8 speed Ergo, downtube or bar end shifter. We suggest replacing the 9 speed pulleys and pulley wheel bolts with 8 speed. The 8 speed bolts fit fine even though the heads are slightly taller than the new 9/10 speed pulley bolt heads. For best shifting we recommend upgrading to current 9 speed. But if you have a sizeable investment in Campy 8 speed then consider using a new 9 speed rear derailleur with your current 8 speed Campy shifters. We give the combination a 9 performance rating on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the best.

Campagnolo and Chris King Headsets

Headsets come in two styles; traditional threaded and newer threadless, and two sizes; 1 inch and 1 1/8 inch. If your fork column has threads cut into it you need a threaded style headset. If it is smooth then you need a threadless headset.
Measure the outside diameter of your fork column to determine whether you need a 1 inch or 1 1/8 size. Your headset must match the fork column diameter.
Stack height is the actual height or width of the lower and upper portions of your headset. To determine the stack height of your existing headset simply use a calipers to measure the height of your lower headset assembly and then your upper headset assembly. Add the two and you will have the stack height of your current headset.
When purchasing a new headset make sure that you get one with the same or shorter stack height. You can always add a spacer to take up any extra space. If you are installing a headset on a new fork we suggest cutting the fork 5 to 10 mm longer than needed. Adding a few spacers will put you in a more comfortable position and always allow you to install a taller stack headset in the future.

Seat Posts and Binder Bolts

Campagnolo Carbon seat posts require a smoothly finished and perfectly round seat tube. Carefully check for metal burrs and sharp edges before installing. Carbon posts should slide into your frame smoothly. We suggest using the Campy 32 mm offset seat post clamp on frames that have removable seat post clamps. Use grease only if needed for lubrication; carbon posts are slippery and will not cold weld to any frame material.
The 250mm Carbon post has a 2mm wall thickness. The 350mm post is 33% stronger with a 3mm carbon wall thickness.

Front Derailleurs and Adapter Clamps

Campagnolo 10 speed front derailleurs may also be used for 5,6,7, 8 and 9 speed drive trains. Simply pop off the two piece plastic insert that is mounted on the front derailleur's outer cage plate. This widens the cage to allow thicker, 5,6,7,8 and 9 speed chains, to pass through.

Front Derailleur Capacity Explained

A front derailleur's capacity is simply the difference between the number of teeth on your largest and smallest chainring. For example if you have a 39/53 chainring combo, (53 - 39 = 14), you will need a front derailleur with a capacity of 14 teeth or more. If you have a 30/40/50 chainring combo, (50 - 30 = 20), you will need a front derailleur with a 20 tooth or more capacity.
You can use a triple front derailleur with a double chainring crankset. A double chainring front derailleur is lighter and will shift more quickly though.

Rear Derailleurs, Jockey Wheels and Bolts

All Campagnolo 9 speed rear derailleurs may be used with Campagnolo 8 speed drive trains as long as you use a 9 speed chain. Most Campagnolo 8 speed rear derailleurs may be converted to 9 speed by switching the jockey wheels to 9 speed and replacing the longer, 8 speed jockey wheel bolts with shorter 9 speed bolts.
8 speed rear derailleurs will shift perfectly with Campagnolo 7 or 8 speed ErgoPower, bar end or downtube levers.

For best 9 speed drive train performance we recommend using 9 speed jockey wheels with a nine speed chain and a 9 speed cassette.

Campagnolo 10 speed and current 9 speed rear derailleurs have a completely different parallelogram than pre-2001 8 and 9 speed rear derailleurs. The new parallelogram provides exceptionally precise, fast and crisp shifting. Unfortunately, because of the new improved geometry, pre-2001, 9 speed rear derailleurs are not compatible with any current 9 speed Ergo Shifters unless you replace the shifter's Ergo Index gear. You can easily upgrade a current 9 speed rear derailleur to 10 speed by simply adding 10 speed pulley wheels. You may also retrograde any 10 speed rear derailleur to current 9 speed by simply switching the pulley wheels.

Current 9 speed rear derailleurs use 8.9 mm wide pulley wheels; 10 speed uses 8.5 mm pulley wheels to accommodate the thinner 10 speed chain. The black plastic wheels are identical; only the spacers are different. Both 9 and 10 speed rear derailleurs use the same length pulley bolts.

Campagnolo's current 9 or 10 speed rear derailleur will shift well with any Campy 8 speed Ergo, downtube or bar end shifters and a nine speed chain. The 10 speed rear derailleur requires 9 speed pulley wheels to work well with Campagnolo 8 speed shifters. For best shifting we recommend upgrading to current 9 speed. But if you have a sizeable investment in Campy 8 speed then consider using a current 9 or 10 speed rear derailleur with your 8 speed Campy shifters. We give the combination a 9 performance rating on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the best.

Campy 10 speed rear derailleurs come in two cage lengths for use with double ring cranksets; normal is generally used with up to 26 tooth cassette cogs, medium for up to 29 tooth cassette cogs. The normal length cage measures 54 mm from the center of the upper pulley bolt to the center of the lower pulley bolt. The medium cage model comes in at 72 mm while the long cage is 90mm.
You may purchase a medium length cage assembly for your Record or Chorus 10 speed rear derailleur to convert it for use with 29 tooth cassette cogs. A third and longer cage, Record rear derailleur is designed for use with the 10 speed triple chain ring system. However you may convert it to 9 speed and use it with any Campagnolo 8 or 9 speed triple drivetrain.
For just $10.00 we can convert any new 10 speed rear derailleur, at the time of purchase, to 9 speed. $10.00 covers labor only; we keep the 10 speed pulley wheels.
All Campagnolo 9 and 10 speed rear derailleurs will shift up to a 29 tooth cassette cog. The reason for using a longer cage is to take up the extra chain slack when you are in a small ring and small cassette cog combination. See our Chain Wrap Capacity below for more details.

Daytona and Centaur components are identical; only the name has changed. Campy did not want to pay the royalty requested by the folks who trademarked the name Daytona. So Campagnolo changed the components name to Centaur.

Chain Wrap Capacity (CW) and Largest Rear Cog (LRC) Explained

Both Chain Wrap and Largest Rear Cog numbers are included with the Campagnolo rear derailleur descriptions below.
The Largest Rear Cog or LRC is simply the largest cog Campagnolo recommends for use with a specific rear derailleur.
Chain Wrap or CW is a simple calculation that will help you determine whether the rear derailleur you choose has a long enough cage to take up the chain slack in your drivetrain. The shorter the cage, the lighter and stiffer the derailleur and the quicker it will shift. Calculate Chain Wrap to get the greatest shifting performance.
To calculate Chain Wrap Capacity determine the difference between your largest and smallest chainring. Then determine the difference between your largest and smalles cog. Add the differences and you have Chain Wrap Capacity.
Example: 42/52 chainrings and a 12/21 cassette yields a CW of 19. 52 - 42 = 10. 21 - 12 = 9. 10 + 9 = 19. So, with a 42/52 chainring and a 12-21 cassette you would need a rear derailleur that has a Chain Wrap Capacity of at least 19.
For a 39/53 and a 13/26 combo you will need a minimum CW of 27. 53-39 = 14. 26 - 13 = 13. 14 + 13 = 27.
In practice the CW numbers are flexiable by one or two points. You could use a 39/53 with a 12-26 cassette with a CW of 27 even though the calculation calls for 28.

The Ergo lever index gear, LD-99-54 will fit ALL Campagnolo 8 speed Ergo levers from 1992 to 1997 and 1998 Campagnolo 9 speed levers. It will also fit 8 speed Sachs New Success Ergo levers.

The above parts will fit 1992 to 1997 Campagnolo 8 speed hubs, derailleurs and Ergo levers. The above Campy Chorus 9/10 speed cassette body comes in an HPW version for factory built wheels with straight pull spokes. Specify HPW when ordering. We also have a version for Euros/Sirrocco wheels that have two piece, non-threaded, Mirage style axles.
Any Campagnolo 8 speed Ergopower, downtube or bar-end shifter will also work perfectly with a Campagnolo 7 speed system. The amount of cable pull is identical for Campagnolo 7 and 8 speed systems.

Many riders are perfectly happy running 8 speeds and do not wish to convert to 9. However they are worried about 8 speed cassette availability. We suggest replacing your old steel, 8 speed cassette body with a new alloy 9/10 speed body. Then use the Wheels spacing kit, #FW-45-48 and a loose cog 9 speed cassette. Use just 8 of the 9 cogs, add the Wheels Mfg. spacers and you will not have to worry about cassette availability for at least another 3 to 5 years! Plus, you will reduce the weight of your rear wheel and be partially ready for a 9 or 10 speed conversion at some point in the future. All Campagnolo 9/10 speed rear hubs can be converted to 8 speed with a Wheels spacing kit, part # FW-45-48 for $29.88, and any loose cog, Campagnolo 9 speed cassette. Record, Chorus and Centaur use an oversize 7075 alloy axle. Veloce uses a steel oversize axle.
All hubs come with 27.0 mm, oversize, cassette lockring for a starting position 12 or 13 tooth cog.

Hub Parts and Freehub or Cassette Bodies

Older, 1993 to 1997, Campagnolo Record and Chorus rear hubs used a threaded axle with a 13 mm long, cassette shoulder. 1993 to 1999, Campagnolo Athena and Veloce hubs use the same axle type but had a longer, 22 mm, cassette shoulder.
Chorus and Record 8 and 9/10 speed, 1993-1998 cassette bodies fit all Record and Chorus hubs from 1993 to 1998.
Veloce and Athena 8 and 9/10 speed 1993-1999, cassette bodies fit all Veloce and Athena hubs from 1993 to 1999.
Because of the different axle shoulder lengths you may not interchange Record/Chorus 1993 to 1998 cassette bodies with 1993 to 1999 Athena/Veloce cassette bodies.
Newer, 1999 to present 9/10 speed oversize Campy hubs use an oversize axle and cassette body. You may interchange oversize axle cassette bodies.

Genuine Campagnolo Ball Bearings

Newer Campy hubs with oversize alloy bodies and axles use the same size bearings in both the front and rear hubs.
Older Campy Record front hubs used 7/32" bearings. Older, Chorus, Athena and Veloce front hubs used 3/16" bearings.
Older, 7, 8 and 9 speed Campy rear hubs used 7/32" bearings on the cassette side and 1/4" on the non-drive side. Older still, freewheel style rear hubs used 1/4" on both sides.
Many riders save money by reusing Campagnolo resin bearing retainers. Clean the retainer with solvent and then pop in, Le Tour loose ball bearings.
All Campagnolo ball bearings are Grade 25 which means that the deviation from a perfect sphere is less than .00025 inches!
For longest life and smoothest performance we recommend using Le Tour Whisper White grease with the Le Tour Grease Gun for all Campagnolo bearings.
