FAQ's - Operating Heart Rate Monitors

Q: Why use a heart rate monitor?
A:

  • The observation that the harder we exercise, the faster our heart beats can be put to good use. Your monitor is your rev counter, giving a precise measurement of your exercise intensity.
  • Individualize your program. You can train at your own ideal pace.
  • It is precise. Direct measurement of your heart rate during exercise is simply the most accurate way to ensure that you achieve your goals.
  • Progress can be monitored and measured.
  • Witnessing your own improvement is motivating.
  • Maximizes the benefits of exercise in the limited time of busy people.
  • Are you on the right track? Are you improving?
  • It can take the guesswork out of your training intensity.
  • It can enable you to evaluate your performance more accurately and adjust your training as needed.
  • Training with a heart rate monitor is like having a full-time personal trainer because of the immediate feedback.
  • Heart rate monitoring provides the key to regulating the quantity and intensity of workouts and racing performance by providing accurate and immediate biofeedback data.

Q: How does a heart monitor work?
A: Heart rate monitors measure the electrical frequency of your heart, the number of beats per minute at which your heart is operating. In contrast, pulse meters (photo-reflectance models) use sensors to measure the mechanical pulse of blood flow through your capillaries, which is then converted into a beat-per-minute readout. Heart rate monitors are so accurate that readings obtained simultaneously by most monitors and by electrocardiogram (ECG) monitors are almost identical. This is not true for photo-reflectance monitors.

Q: I have questions concerning training using Cateye heart rate monitors or software. Who should I talk to?

Q: I have questions concerning training using Sigma Sport heart rate monitor. Who should I talk to?
A: Contact the Sigma Sport customer relations department at 888-744-6277

Q: Is there nickel or other materials that may cause an allergic reaction used in the heart rate monitor components?
A: All components that may come in contact with the skin have been tested and found to be safe. Samples from the manufacturing lots are taken frequently to ensure safety.

Q: Is it possible to use the Polar HRM while swimming or while doing other water sports?
A: Yes it is. The transmitter is completely sealed. Polar is the only true 100% waterproof unit available. It is water resistant to 20 meters or 65 feet. However, you should never press any buttons while under water because you will break the watertight seal.

Branford Bike Online Catalog - Archival Edition
brought to you by the former owner of Branford Bike, Tim Brockett via his personal web site, TimsLife.Com
This is an archival edition of the Branford Bike web site from February 2006. Complete with product photos, prices, how to articles and technical specifications it is a treasure trove of accurate, detailed and historical information.

In July of 2006 Branford Bike was incinerated by a huge forest fire. No one was hurt but the inventory and buildings were completely destroyed. I witnessed the fire and stayed until the trees were burning in my driveway. At that point I hiked from Branford Bike, through the smoke and embers, down the mountain to my Jeep 3 miles away. I took photos and wrote about the harrowing experience so everyone could see what I saw. My insurance was generous and I later rebuilt my home and started another business selling books. Read the story here.

Branford Bike was a huge part of my life for over 30 years; June 1976 to July 2006. I enjoyed those years tremendously and Branford Bike was often a labor of love. I hope you enjoy browsing through the archival catalog. If your visit brings back pleasant memories please share them with me via e-mail at timbrockett@gmail.com .

If you find any printed Branford Bike catalogs, advertisments or flyers please scan them as a PDF and email. Or you may mail them via US Post to Tim Brockett, PO Box 1711, Emigrant, MT 59027. Eventually I will post them in a Memorabilia catalog section.

Many Thanks and Best Wishes,
Tim Brockett
