FAQ's - Heart Rate Monitor Repair

Q: Where do I take the heart rate monitor receiver (watch) for battery replacement or other service?
A: If you have a Polar unit we recommend that you return the unit to Polar for all repairs and battery changes. For Cateye or Sigma Sport units a good jeweler or electronic technician can change the battery for you. They must be careful that the unit is properly resealed and they do not damage the unit and break the watertight seal.

Q: Is it possible to replace the battery in the transmitter?
A: In a Polar transmitter there is no need to replace the battery as it will last on average about 2500 hours (5-6 years) if maintained as instructed in the User's Manual. The normal wear and tear of the transmitter usually requires its replacement before the battery wears out. Cateye and Sigma transmitters have easily replaceable batteries. However you must be sure to seal the cap snugly so no water or perspiration seeps into the transmitter.

Troubleshooting Heart Rate Monitors

Q: Why does the displayed heart rate jump to 240 or to 0 during my exercise period?
A: It is likely that there is a source of electromagnetic interference such as power lines, TV, monitor, another heart rate monitor, or a bicycle computer nearby. Some exercise equipment or bicycle computers may also interfere with the heart rate measurement.

Q: The heart rate is unstable especially at the beginning of the training session. What could be the reason?
A: The electrodes in the transmitter belt must be wet when placing the transmitter on your chest. This will ensure that good contact is made. Use Buh-Bump electrode cream for better contact.
When you are done, wipe dry the transmitter belt. This will ensure a full battery life.

Q: No heart rate is displayed. The watch functions of the receiver are working all right. What could be the reason?
A: The reason may be dry or dirty electrodes or the transmitter battery has worn out. Try using the receiver with another transmitter for diagnosing whether the transmitter is the reason for the malfuntion. A little Buh-Bump cream will help with poor contact between the transmitter's electrodes and your skin.

Q: When I call up the File Summary or Multiple File Summary display in the Polar HR Analysis Software, I don't get colors.
A:The File Summary feature works in such a way that it requires a certain procedure in order to show the summary bar. If there are no colors (white bar), it means that the user has not saved the File Summary corresponding to correct limits before using the File Summary or Multiple File Summary. To save the data, both the File Summary and the curve should be on the screen. Select the curve and a certain time period (blue bar under the curve) by pressing the left key of the mouse and pulling the pointer under the X scale of the curve. Select the summary and the threshold or limits and save the file from Special or diskette symbol. The Summary should work now.

Q: How should I wear the transmitter?
A: The manufacturer's logo should be the right side up and the elastic belt should be flat against your skin.

Branford Bike Online Catalog - Archival Edition
brought to you by the former owner of Branford Bike, Tim Brockett via his personal web site, TimsLife.Com
This is an archival edition of the Branford Bike web site from February 2006. Complete with product photos, prices, how to articles and technical specifications it is a treasure trove of accurate, detailed and historical information.

In July of 2006 Branford Bike was incinerated by a huge forest fire. No one was hurt but the inventory and buildings were completely destroyed. I witnessed the fire and stayed until the trees were burning in my driveway. At that point I hiked from Branford Bike, through the smoke and embers, down the mountain to my Jeep 3 miles away. I took photos and wrote about the harrowing experience so everyone could see what I saw. My insurance was generous and I later rebuilt my home and started another business selling books. Read the story here.

Branford Bike was a huge part of my life for over 30 years; June 1976 to July 2006. I enjoyed those years tremendously and Branford Bike was often a labor of love. I hope you enjoy browsing through the archival catalog. If your visit brings back pleasant memories please share them with me via e-mail at timbrockett@gmail.com .

If you find any printed Branford Bike catalogs, advertisments or flyers please scan them as a PDF and email. Or you may mail them via US Post to Tim Brockett, PO Box 1711, Emigrant, MT 59027. Eventually I will post them in a Memorabilia catalog section.

Many Thanks and Best Wishes,
Tim Brockett
