Campagnolo ErgoBrain FAQ's

Ergobrain Functions

Q: What functions does the Ergobrain computer have?
A: The computer ErgoBrain has these features:
current speed, timer, average speed, maximum speed, trip distance, total distance, gear development, clock, time, cadence, stopwatch, average speed (STOPWATCH), maximum speed (STOPWATCH), trip distance (STOPWATCH), pace arrow, self learning function, chainring/cog number of teeth indicator, chainring indicator, cog indicator, TWO "wheels" in the memory, EEPROM memory, circumference of the wheel with 1mm step, power saving feature, chainring's shift timing.
The ErgoBrain has two large buttons and two small buttons. The buttons of the Ergopower lever function exactly the same as the large buttons at the side of the main unit of the computer ErgoBrain.

Q: Why does the ErgoBrain have a cadence sensor?
A: There are essentially two reasons:
A)This way you always get the REAL cadence (when you don’t pedal, going downhill for example, the cadence is obviously zero and this will be the value indicated by the ErgoBrain);
b) this lets the computer have the “self-learning” function: all you need to do is pedal and make all the shiftings and the computer will automatically measure the number of cogs teeth without you having to carry out any manual operation to enter the number of teeth. And if you change wheel, it is only necessary to restart the function.
It should also be remembered that the cadence magnet with clamp, considered ugly by most people, can be replaced by the special magnet (included in the installation kit) which is fitted in Campagnolo (and other) pedal axle, thereby becoming invisible.

Q: What are the differences between the ErgoBrains and other cyclecomputers?
A: The main difference is the integration of the Ergopower levers with the ErgoBrain which provides a great deal of drivetrain information to the rider. Most of this information is not provided by any other cyclecomputer.

Q: Are there any other special features?
A: Besides the various innovations, the self-learning feature is probably the most notable.

Q: Which groups are compatible with the ErgoBrains?
A: All the 9s groups with 1999, 2000 and 2001 range Ergopower levers are compatible with both computers. The 10speed groups are only compatible with the ErgoBrain10. The "ErgoBrain compatible" Ergopower levers can be identified by the little buttons on the silicon rubber hoods and by the corresponding holes in the body underneath the hoods.

Q: Why are the ErgoBrains not compatible with the Ergopower of the 1998 range?
A: Because starting with the 1999 range, the mold of the composite Ergopower body has been changed to host the interface inserts.

Q: I have two bicycles: can I buy one main unit and two complete assembly kits?
A: Yes, they are also sold separately. The fact that the computer holds two wheels into its memory (each one with its own sprocket set) makes it very convenient to move it from one bike to the other.

Q: Are the ErgoBrains compatible with the "triple" drivetrain?
A: The ErgoBrain 9 is compatible. The ErgoBrain10 is compatible if it is mounted on a 9s bike; it is not compatible if it is mounted on a 10s bike. As of 2001 Campagnolo still does not make a 10 speed Triple drivetrain.

Q: Is the ErgoBrain 9 compatible with the 10s groups?
A: No. For the 10s groups it is necessary to use the ErgoBrain10.

Q: Why is it not necessary to program the sprockets?
A: The ErgoBrains are self-learning computers. They use an algorithm based on the available information (circumference and angular speed of the wheel, cadence, chainrings) to determine which sprockets are used.

Q: Does the hidden magnet work only with the Campagnolo pedals?
A: No, it also works with other products. However, the traditional zip-tie crank magnet is also part of the assembly kit.

Q: How can the hidden magnet work with the Record pedals, given the fact that titanium is non-magnetic?
A: In the titanium spindle of the left Record 2000 pedal we inserted a tiny steel plate, to attract and keep in position the magnet.

Q: I regularly use two sets of wheels, each one with its own sprocket combination. Do I have to re-program the computer every time I change wheels? Or should I use the self-learning procedure?
A: The ErgoBrains keep two wheels in their memory, each one with its own sprocket combination. It's as easy as selecting wheel "A" or wheel "B".

Q: What is the Gear Development?
A: It is the distance covered by one full rotation of the crank. It considers the circumference of the wheel (650C or 700C) and is a useful function in order to understand and compare how hard one is pushing on the pedals.

Q: How can I use the ErgoBrains when I am training on the rollers?
A: It is as easy as purchasing one spare cadence sensor, which is identical to the speed sensor but has a longer wire, and installing it on the rear wheel, together with the magnet.

Q: I do not currently use the cadence function. Can I remove the sensor?
A: Yes, the sensor can be detached and then reattached at a later date. However, without the cadence sensor the self-learning capability is not active.

Q: Why does the chainring/cog teeth indicator alternate so quickly on the computer display?
A: In order to allow you to acquire the information you are looking for with a quick glance, thereby minimizing the time that you take your eyes from the road to look at the computer.

Q: If I do not install the cadence sensor, can I still see the chainring/cog teeth indicator?
A: Yes. The cog combination can be manually selected very quickly and easily. Please see your owners manual for further instructions.

Q: How long does the ErgoBrain battery last?
A: One and a half years if it's used one hour per day; but the EEPROM memory allows quick battery changes without having to re-program the computer.

Q: What is the Ergopower control spacer?
A: For correct operation of the ErgoBrain computer, a spacer should always be fitted on the Ergopower handlebar clamps when fitting the transducers on the Ergopower levers. These spacers are provided with the ErgoBrain assembly kit and are contained in a special holder.

Q: Are you going to produce an "Oversized" handlebar clamp?
A: Oversize handlebars with a greater diameter than the current standard are spreading on the market. To meet the needs of owners of bicycles with this type of handlebars, Campagnolo supplies an arm for oversize handlebars (as a spare part). This arm has a diameter of 31.7 mm and its code is CI-EB001. It should be available in late spring, 2001.

Q: What are the Campagnolo part numbers for the various Ergobrain 9 components?
A: They are:

CI00-EB09S1 ErgoBrain 9 Computer
CI00-EB09C1 Main unit ONLY
CI00-EB09B1 Assembly kit
CI-EB002 Sensor attachment
CI-EB003 Cadence magnet
CI-EB004 Cadence PRO-FIT pedal magnet
CI-EB005 Speed magnet
CI-EB006 Cadence sensor
CI-EB007 Speed sensor.

Branford Bike Online Catalog - Archival Edition
brought to you by the former owner of Branford Bike, Tim Brockett via his personal web site, TimsLife.Com
This is an archival edition of the Branford Bike web site from February 2006. Complete with product photos, prices, how to articles and technical specifications it is a treasure trove of accurate, detailed and historical information.

In July of 2006 Branford Bike was incinerated by a huge forest fire. No one was hurt but the inventory and buildings were completely destroyed. I witnessed the fire and stayed until the trees were burning in my driveway. At that point I hiked from Branford Bike, through the smoke and embers, down the mountain to my Jeep 3 miles away. I took photos and wrote about the harrowing experience so everyone could see what I saw. My insurance was generous and I later rebuilt my home and started another business selling books. Read the story here.

Branford Bike was a huge part of my life for over 30 years; June 1976 to July 2006. I enjoyed those years tremendously and Branford Bike was often a labor of love. I hope you enjoy browsing through the archival catalog. If your visit brings back pleasant memories please share them with me via e-mail at timbrockett@gmail.com .

If you find any printed Branford Bike catalogs, advertisments or flyers please scan them as a PDF and email. Or you may mail them via US Post to Tim Brockett, PO Box 1711, Emigrant, MT 59027. Eventually I will post them in a Memorabilia catalog section.

Many Thanks and Best Wishes,
Tim Brockett
