Campagnolo Chorus 9 Speed MK2 Cassettes:
  • Nickel chromed cogs and alloy carriers reduce weight while creating a stiffer and more responsive cassette.
  • Heat treated steel cogs are precisely machined and nickel chrome plated for smooth shifting and excellent wear.
  • The smallest steel cog has a hardened chrome, satin silver finish for longer wear. This is the same heat treatment and finish that is now applied to all of the Record 10 speed steel cassette cogs.
  • Campagnolo designates any 9 or 10 speed cassette that uses cogs bolted to alloy carriers as MK 2 cassettes. Non MK 2 cassettes are simply 8 or 9 individual cogs separated by resin spacers.
  • Each cog has an indented ramp, called Ultra Drive, to assist in up shifting. Tooth profiles are also custom configured to help with down shifting.
  • 2001 to current models use Ultra Drive cogs; 2000 models use EXA drive. The spacing is identical and both will shift flawlessly with current or older Campagnolo 9 rear derailleurs and Ergo 9 speed levers.
  • Chorus 9 speed MK 2 cassettes can last up to 8,000 miles if you keep them clean, well lubricated and use a Campagnolo chain.
  • For longest life and smoothest shifting we recommend using Le Tour Chain Lube on these premium cassettes.
  • Campagnolo 9 speed cassette cogs technical information:
    Each cog is 1.75 mm thick. Campy uses 2.8 mm amber resin spacers and spaces their cogs 4.55 mm on center. That is to say that the distance from the center of one cog to the center of the adjoining cog, measured from the center of the first cog to the center of the second cog, is 4.55 mm. The inside diameter of each amber spacer is 35.4 mm.
  • Individual cogs are available below.
  • Each cassette comes with 9 cogs and 3 or 4 amber resin spacers. A lockring is NOT included.
  • These cassettes will fit all Campy 9 and 9/10 speed hubs from 1997 to the present. They may be used with ALL 9 speed models of Campagnolo Ergo shifters and rear derailleurs.
  • The weight of a 12-23 Chorus MK 2 9 speed cassette with out a lockring is just 197 grams.
  • Cogs that are bolted together and mounted on an alloy carrier are surrounded by brackets like { }.

    The ONLY sizes we can still get from Campagnolo Italy are:

    12 - 13 - 14 - 15 - {16 - 17} - {19 - 21 - 23}
    13 - 14 - 15 - 16 - {17 - 19} - {21 - 23 - 26}
  • Made in Italy by Campagnolo and backed with a three year warranty.

EXA Drive and Ultra Drive - How they differ...

EXA Drive and Ultra Drive

The above photo shows an EXA Drive cog on the left and a new 10 speed, Ultra Drive cog on the right. Note how the two step, machined indentation slightly varies between both cogs. The "O" stamping plays no mechanical role; it is there only as a visual indicator for proper cog stacking.
This machined indentation is responsible for helping to pick up your chain when you up shift, and move it on to the next cog. EXA Drive indentations were originally designed for Campy 8 speed chains and cassettes back in the mid 1990's. It is designed to engage the chain rivet head first and then the outside chain plate. EXA Drive works very well with both 8 and 9 speed systems.
Campagnolo 10 speed chains do not have protruding rivet heads and pose a problem for EXA Drive. Thus the invention of Ultra Drive. The Ultra Drive indentation is designed to catch the chain's outer plate and assist the chain up to the next cog.
In early spring 2000, Campagnolo quietly started to introduce Ultra Drive cogs on all of their 10 speed cassettes. In late 2000 they made it official and raised the price to cover the new design and machining costs.
Ultra Drive is essential for smooth shifting on 10 speed sytems. It is also designed to work with all Campy 9 speed systems and chains. We noticed a large improvement in shifting with 10 speeds but only a slight difference with 9 speed systems. Both EXA Drive and Ultra Drive cassettes work perfectly with all past and current Campagnolo 9 speed systems. You can even mix Ultra Drive and Exa Drive cogs on a cassette.

Branford Bike Online Catalog - Archival Edition
brought to you by the former owner of Branford Bike, Tim Brockett via his personal web site, TimsLife.Com
This is an archival edition of the Branford Bike web site from February 2006. Complete with product photos, prices, how to articles and technical specifications it is a treasure trove of accurate, detailed and historical information.

In July of 2006 Branford Bike was incinerated by a huge forest fire. No one was hurt but the inventory and buildings were completely destroyed. I witnessed the fire and stayed until the trees were burning in my driveway. At that point I hiked from Branford Bike, through the smoke and embers, down the mountain to my Jeep 3 miles away. I took photos and wrote about the harrowing experience so everyone could see what I saw. My insurance was generous and I later rebuilt my home and started another business selling books. Read the story here.

Branford Bike was a huge part of my life for over 30 years; June 1976 to July 2006. I enjoyed those years tremendously and Branford Bike was often a labor of love. I hope you enjoy browsing through the archival catalog. If your visit brings back pleasant memories please share them with me via e-mail at timbrockett@gmail.com .

If you find any printed Branford Bike catalogs, advertisments or flyers please scan them as a PDF and email. Or you may mail them via US Post to Tim Brockett, PO Box 1711, Emigrant, MT 59027. Eventually I will post them in a Memorabilia catalog section.

Many Thanks and Best Wishes,
Tim Brockett
