Branford Bike: Campagnolo and Shimano Cassette Lockrings

Campagnolo 8 Speed Cassette Lockrings:

Precisely machined from nickel chrome steel. Chrome plated for extra durability.
The outside diameter of the threaded portion is 29.0 mm. This is Campagnolo's largest, threaded diameter, cassette lockring.
We suggest using a Park Torque Wrench, for the most accurate installation. Campagnolo recommends tightening the lockring to 50 Newton Meters (N.m) or 36.9 foot pounds.
Fits all Campagnolo 8 speed steel cassettes that start with a 12 tooth or larger cog.

Steel 8 Speed Freehub Steel 8 Speed Cog

This lockring will fit all Campagnolo 8 speed hubs with steel freehub bodies as pictured above. Note how the 8 splines are only 1/8 of an inch ( 3.2 mm) deep. This lockring will NOT fit Campagnolo Record 8 speed alloy freehub bodies that came with all titanium cog cassettes. They require a 26 mm outside diameter lockring that is usually used for older 9 speed hubs.

Campagnolo's Original 9 Speed Cassette Lockrings:

The outside diameter of the threaded portion is 26.0 mm.
We suggest using a Park Torque Wrench, for the most accurate installation. Campagnolo recommends tightening the lockring to 50 Newton Meters (N.m) or 36.9 foot pounds.
Note how these lockrings are stamped with the words "9 Speed" which can be confusing. A lockring is matched to a specific cassette body and a first position cog only. The number of cogs is not important. Therefore you may use this lockring with an 8, 9 or 10 speed cassette as long as the body and first position cog are correct.
The 26.0 mm lockring is the only model that has "9 Speed" stamped on it. Neither 29.0 nor 27.0 mm lockrings have any indication of their size or the number of gears they may be used with. The flange beveling does vary between the different lockrings and helps with identification.
26.0 mm lockrings come in two flange sizes:
One with a 38.5 mm flange for cassettes that start with a 12 tooth or larger cog.
Another with a 35.2 mm flange that is for cassettes with an 11 tooth first position cog. These lockrings are NOT interchangeable! You must match the flange size to your first position cassette cog.
The 38.5 mm flange diameter lockring is also available in polished titanium. The 35.2 mm flange diameter lockring is only made in chromed steel.
These lockrings are designed to fit the original Campagnolo 9 speed hubs that first appeared in 1997.

1997 9 Speed Campy Hub

Note how the axle is black and threaded. The axle nuts are also black. This hub's mid section is slightly thinner than the newer "oversize" Campagnolo rear hubs. The hub body between the center and the cassette flange is rounder or more bulbous than newer "oversize" hubs.
Campagnolo 26.0 mm lockrings fit the following hubs:
All 1997 and 1998 Record, Chorus, Athena, Veloce and Mirage 9 speed rear hubs.
All 1997 and 1998 Campagnolo Factory Built 9 speed Wheels.
1999 Athena, Veloce and Mirage 9 speed hubs.
Please note that all Campagnolo 9 speed hubs and wheels will also accept any Campagnolo 10 speed cassette.

Shimano 9 speed lockrings come in two flange sizes:

The Dura-Ace lockrings come in satin anodized aluminum alloy. The Ultegra model is chromed steel. Lockring spacers are required and do not come with the lockrings. Please order separately.
Shimano Dura-Ace lockrings will also fit XTR cassettes. Ultegra lockrings will also fit XT, LX, and 105 cassettes.
Shimano 9 speed lockrings also fit all Shimano Factory Built Wheels that use a 9 speed cassette listed above.

This is an archival edition of the Branford Bike web site from February 2006. Complete with product photos, prices, how to articles and technical specifications it is a treasure trove of accurate, detailed and historical information.

In July of 2006 Branford Bike was incinerated by a huge forest fire. No one was hurt but the inventory and buildings were completely destroyed. I witnessed the fire and stayed until the trees were burning in my driveway. At that point I hiked from Branford Bike, through the smoke and embers, down the mountain to my Jeep 3 miles away. I took photos and wrote about the harrowing experience so everyone could see what I saw. My insurance was generous and I later rebuilt my home and started another business selling books. Branford Bike was a huge part of my life for over 30 years; June 1976 to July 2006. I enjoyed those years tremendously and Branford Bike was often a labor of love.
